The active ingredient of the Generic Acticin is Permethrin. It is chemically denoted as 3-Phenoxybenzyl (1RS)-cis,trans-3-(2,2-dichlorovinyl)-2,2-dimethylcyclopropanecarboxylate. The formula of the ingredient is C21H20Cl2O3 and the molecular weight is 391.29. Inactive ingredients of the topical cream are polyoxyethylene cetyl ethers, carbomer 934P coconut oil, isopropyl myristate, butylated hydroxytoluene, glycerin, sodium hydroxide, lanolin alcohols, glyceryl stearate, light mineral oil and water. Formaldehyde is included as a preservative.
Permethrin is a pyrethroid that acts against variety of pests including mites, fleas, lice, ticks and other insects. This drug acts on cellular membrane related to sentient nerves. Permethrin paralyzes and kills the arthropods to cure scabies.
One should use this topical application after seeking a proper medical advice.
Generic Acticin (Permethrin) is meant to be used topically only, on areas such as the hair (scalp) or skin.
Use the medicine precisely as directed by your physician or as given on the product package. Do not take for more time than suggested.
Do not use the topical cream on wounds or cuts.
Directions for treatment of scabies:
Ensure that the infected area on your skin is dry and clean. Apply a thin layer of Generic Acticin to the infected body part. Keep the medication on for about eight to 14 hours and then rinse it off entirely.
Place extra caution when using the cream for children. Apply the medicine to the temples, scalp and forehead. Do not apply to nose, eyes, mouth or genitals.
Consult your doctor if there is no improvement in your condition in 14 days.
Treating head lice:
Firstly, thoroughly rinse your hair using a shampoo only and then dry you hair with a towel, keep it a little wet. Apply the cream enough so that it covers all the hair. Keep the cream on for about 10 minutes before rinsing the hair.
Ensure that the medicine does not enter the eye.
If lice still persists after seven days, use the cream again.
A nit comb may also be used to get rid of the lice eggs. While using a nit comb, make sure that your hair is slightly wet.
After applying Generic Acticin, wash all the clothes, towels, bed sheets and pillow covers in hot water and let it dry in the sun, to prevent re-infection. Soak all the hair accessories for 10 minutes, in hot water.
Avoid sexual contact until your scabies infection is completely cured. At the same time, avoid sharing hats, cloths, hair brushes/combs, bed lines, etc. while using this topical application.
During pregnancy or breast-feeding, ask your doctor whether you can apply this medication or not.
More importantly, do not use this cream for children younger than two months.
Keep Generic Acticin at room temperature away from heat and moisture.
Before using Generic Acticin, ensure that you doctor knows if you have any allergic reactions from Permethrin.
Refrain from using any other skin or cosmetic products.
Lice infections are extremely contagious, so do not share your hairbrushes or combs with others.
Do not overuse this medication, as overdose can lead to skin rashes and other complications.
One should apply Generic Acticin for at least 7 to 14 days to destroy the infectious mites. However, it is advisable to ask the dermatologist about the duration of treatment with this medication.
Probable Side Effects
Seek immediate medical aid if you experience side effects of Generic Acticin, such as –
Swelling of face
Redness and burning of skin
It is unlikely that oral or injectable drugs will hinder the effects of Generic Acticin. But cosmetic products and other medicated topical applications can interact with Permethrin. Hence, inform your doctor if you are using any skin cream, lotion, liniments, etc.
People with known case of allergic to Permethrin are not allowed to use this topical application.
