The active ingredient of Generic Lithobid is lithium carbonate. The formula of the ingredient is Li2CO3 and its molecular mass is 73.89. The drug is an extended-release tablet availed in only 300 mg strength. The inactive ingredients are calcium stearate, carnauba wax, cellulose compounds, indigo carmine Aluminum Lake, Allura Red AC Aluminum Lake, Sunset Yellow FCF Aluminum Lake, polyvidone, propylene glycol, sodium dodecyl sulfate, sodium chloride, sodium starch glycolate, glucitol, and titanium dioxide.
Pharmacological studies have shown that the active agent Lithium alters transportation of sodium in muscles and nerve cells. However, the exact biochemical action mechanism of Lithium in subsiding mania is not clearly understood.
Generic Lithobid may take many weeks before it starts to show its effects.
Take the whole tablet orally; do not crush or break the tablet, as doing so may not yield beneficial effect
The dosing for adult patients with acute mania is 900 mg twice daily or 600 mg thrice daily.
For long-term treatment of mania, dosing for adults is 600 mg two or three times a day i.e. up to 1200 mg a day.
