Generic Septra is comprised of two active ingredients Sulfamethoxazole (400mg) and Trimethoprim (80mg). The chemical name for Sulfamethoxazole is N1-(5-methyl-3-isoxazolyl) sulfanilamide and its molecular mass is 253.28 and the chemical name for trimethoprim is 2, 4-diamino-5-(3,4,5-trimethoxybenzyl) pyrimidine and its molecular mass is 290.3. On the other hand, the chemical name of Trimethoprim is 5-(3,4,5-Trimethoxybenzyl)pyrimidine-2,4-diamine, and the molecular mass is 290.32 g/mol. The inactive components in this medicine are sodium starch glycolate, sodium benzoate 15%, Docusate sodium 85%, magnesium stearate and pregelatinized starch.
Sulfamethoxazole is a bacteriostatic agent, while Trimethoprim is a bactericidal agent.
